چکیده

The occurrence and response of N a + K + A T P a s e specific activity to environmental salinity changes were studied in gill extracts of all of the gills of the euryhaline crab Chasmagnathus granulata from Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) All of the gills exhibited a salinity depen dent N a + K + A T P a s e activity, although the pat tern of response to environmental salinity was different among gills As described in other euryhaline crabs highest N a + K + A T P a s e specific activity was found in posterior gills (6 to 8), which, with exception of gill 6, increased upon acclimation to reduced salinity However, a high increase of activity also occurred in anterior gills (1 to 5) m diluted media Fur thermore, both short and long term differential changes of N a + K + A T P a s e activity occurred among the gills after the transfer of crabs to reduced salinity The fact that variations of N a + K + A T P a s e activity in the gills were concomitant with the transition from osmoconformity to lonoregulation suggests that this enzyme is a component of the branchial íonoregulatory mechanisms at the biochemical level in this crab K e y words: Chasmagnathus granulata — Crustacean — Gill — N a + K + A T P a s e — Osmoregulation

Gill Na(+),K(+)-ATPase and osmoregulation in the estuarine crab, Chasmagnathus granulata Dana, 1851 (Decapoda, Grapsidae).

Some kinetic properties of gill Na(+),K(+)-ATPase of the estuarine crab, Chasmagnathus granulata, and its involvement in osmotic adaptation were analyzed. Results suggest the presence of different Na(+),K(+)-ATPase isoforms in anterior and posterior gills. They have different affinities for Na(+), but similar affinity values for K(+), Mg(2+), ATP and similar enzymatic profiles as a function of ...

Regulation of ion transport by pH and [HCO3-] in isolated gills of the crab Neohelice (Chasmagnathus) granulata.

Posterior isolated gills of Neohelice (Chasmagnathus) granulatus were symmetrically perfused with hemolymph-like saline of varying [HCO3-] and pH. Elevating [HCO3-] in the saline from 2.5 to 12.5 mmol/l (pH 7.75 in both cases) induced a significant increase in the transepithelial potential difference (Vte), a measure of ion transport. The elevation in [HCO3-] also induced a switch from acid sec...

Effect of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Dana) on the benthic community of a SW Atlantic coastal lagoon

This study evaluated the effect of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulata on the benthic community in mudflats of the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (Argentina, 378 459 S, 578 269 W). A significantly higher abundance of the polychaete Laeonereis acuta was found inside the C. granulata crab bed than outside. However, L. acuta abundance decreased in summer probably due to the greater activity of...

V-type H+-ATPase and Na+,K+-ATPase in the gills of 13 euryhaline crabs during salinity acclimation.

Because of their diverse habitats, crabs are excellent experimental species to study owing to the morphological changes and physiological adaptation that occur during their terrestrial invasion. Their hemolymphic osmoregulation in brackish water is crucial for a successful terrestrial invasion. Crabs can actively uptake or excrete ions upon salinity change, and the gills play a major role among...

Transepithelial potential differences and Na(+) flux in isolated perfused gills of the crab Chasmagnathus granulatus (Grapsidae) acclimated to hyper- and hypo-salinity.

We studied the transepithelial potential difference (TEPD) and (22)Na flux across isolated perfused gills (anterior pair 5 and posterior pairs 6-8) of the crab Chasmagnathus granulatus acclimated to either hypo- or hyper-osmotic conditions. The gills of crabs acclimated to low salinity, perfused and bathed with 10 per thousand saline solutions, produced the following TEPDs (hemolymph side with ...
